Different roots. Shared values.

Five stories. One Mzansi.

For Heritage Day, we asked South Africans to tell us what makes them who they are.

The response was extraordinary. People shared stories of ancestry, language, faith, food, family traditions, Ubuntu and the responsibility to carry their heritage forward.

From these entries, five stories stood out for their depth, authenticity and generosity.

Their cultures and experiences may be different, but the values running through them are remarkably similar: family, belonging, respect, resilience, sharing and the desire to nourish the next generation.

Together, they remind us that:

More unites us
than divides us.

Each winner has already secured 1,000 Nutrific breakfasts for an Educare. Now we are inviting South Africa to meet them—and vote for the story that stayed with them.

Story 1 · Mpho Prince Sephaphathi

Heritage in action

This is MY heritage. This is what makes me, ME. 💛🇿🇦 I am a proud Motswana woman from Bojanala Platinum District Municipality. My ancestry is Batswana. My language is Setswana/Sesotho. My religion is love for people. My place is this dusty kasi where houses are small but hearts are big. You see these girls in this picture? Taken yesterday on Heritage Day at 17:18. They are not just dancing. These are children I took off the streets. After school they had nowhere to go - some hungry, some angry, some lost. I said to them, "Tlong, bana baka, let me show you who you are." I took my own money and made them these white traditional skirts and tops. White, because in my culture white means peace, purity, ancestors watching over us. I teach them to dance Setswana dance, to sing, to be proud to be African. I teach them _Botho_ - that Motho ke motho ka batho babang. That I am because we are. This is my family tradition - my late mother taught me that a child in this village is MY child. So I feed them when I can, I teach them, I keep them safe. Taking these kids off the streets and teaching them Ubuntu is what makes me sleep peacefully at night. Knowing that their feet are dancing in the sun, not walking into trouble. If I win, I want to give the 2,000 breakfasts to our local Educare Centre here in Bojanala, because many of these little ones go to school with an empty stomach. Nutrific My heritage is not in a museum. It is alive, in these girls, in this dust, in this dance. #HappyHeritageDay #SouthAfrica #Nutrific #SuperMornings #Family

A celebration of South African Muslim heritage, faith, family gatherings and the shared humanity found around the table.

Qadira has already secured 1,000 Nutrific breakfasts for Silvertown Educare Centre.

My heritage is a beautiful blend of faith, family, tradition and the little things that make a house feel like home. ❤️🇿🇦I’m proudly South African and Muslim, and for me, heritage is so much more than where you come from it’s what you carry forward. It’s hearing the Athaan and knowing it’s time to pause and remember Allah. It’s teaching my little boy our duas, our Kalima and the stories of Nabi Muhammad SAW, so that the love and lessons passed down to me can live on through him. 🤍It’s the smell of homecooked food filling the kitchen, family gathering around a table, sharing stories, laughing, checking in on one another and making sure nobody leaves without eating. It’s Eid mornings, dressing up, visiting loved ones, sweet treats, warm hugs and making memories that our children will one day tell their children about.....Growing up in South Africa has also taught me that our heritage is beautifully diverse. We may have different cultures, languages, religions and traditions, but food, family and kindness have a way of bringing us together.....My greatest hope is that my son grows up knowing exactly where he comes from, appreciating the heritage he has inherited and carrying its beautiful parts forward with pride......Because to me, heritage isn't just our past......It’s what we teach, what we share and what we leave behind. ❤️🇿🇦 And if I could share 2,000 breakfasts with an Educare Centre, I’d love to give children not only a delicious breakfast, but a little reminder that every child deserves to start their day feeling cared for, nourished and ready to learn. 🥣❤️ #HappyHeritageDay #SouthAfrica #Nutrific #SuperMornings #Family

Story 3 · Fhatu Lubisi

Grounded by her roots

“Bushbuckridge taught me Ubuntu, but in Xitsonga we call it Vumunhu.”

A joyful expression of Tsonga heritage shaped by respect, resilience, faith, shared food and dancing through hard times.

Fhatu has already secured 1,000 Nutrific breakfasts for Thuto Pele Day Care and Pre-school.

I am Fhatu Lubisi, a proud Tsonga girl from Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga. I am Mutsonga — we greet with "Avuxeni" and believe in Rirhandzu na Xichavo — Love and Respect. I was raised on Vuswa, Tihove and Xigugu, raised by the sound of the Xibelani skirt and the drums of Xincayincayi. My granny taught me "Ku hlupheka a ku nandzihi kambe ku dyondzisa" — suffering teaches. We are Christian but we still respect our midzimu, we share food from one plate, we dance through hard times. Bushbuckridge taught me Ubuntu, but in Xitsonga we call it Vumunhu. Respect for elders — you never pass an elder without greeting. Hard work — we wake up early to sweep the yard, fetch water, work the field. And love — "Rirhandzu i rixaka" — love is kinship. I may now live between Katlehong and Bushbuckridge, hustling for a better job so I can further my studies, but my heart is still that village girl who fetches wood, who prays loudly in church, who dances Xibelani at weddings. I am Tsonga. I am resilient. I am respectful, joyful and proud. If I win, I choose Thuto Pele Day Care and Pre School because every child deserves a full stomach and a proud start to the day. Inkomu! #HappyHeritageDay #SouthAfrica #Nutrific #SuperMornings #Family

Story 4 · Primrose Nombali

Always room for one more

“My heritage taught me to feed the village.”

A beautiful, chaotic Mzansi mix of family roots, Ubuntu, South African jazz, shared breakfasts, traditional attire, Springbok jerseys and three languages spoken in one sentence.

Primrose has already secured 1,000 Nutrific breakfasts for Honey Beez Daycare Centre.

What makes me ME? It’s the beautiful, chaotic blend of my family’s roots and that unmistakable Mzansi warmth where there is always room for one more around the table! My heritage lives in the early mornings when the kettle is whistling, the radio is playing classic South African jazz, and a warm bowl of breakfast is being shared. It’s inherited from my Gogo, who taught us Ubuntu that we are only people through other people. It's in the way we celebrate: wearing our stunning traditional attire on heritage day, but also throwing on a Springbok jersey when the game is on! We speak three languages in one sentence, we laugh loudly, and we heal through sharing food. Winning those 2,000 breakfasts would mean everything because my heritage taught me to feed the village. I’d choose Honey Beez Day Care Center in a heartbeat to pass that love, fuel, and #SuperMornings energy down to the next generation!

Story 5 · Mphoza Wa Mokgatle

The roots we carry

“I am my Gogo’s hands. I am my father’s language. I am my mother’s faith.”

A Venda story carried through family, language, prayer, traditional food, woodsmoke, folk tales and the responsibility to remember where we come from.

Mphoza has already secured 1,000 Nutrific breakfasts for Smart Kids Daycare and Pre-School.

Nutrific My Heritage is a warm pot on a slow fire. ❤️🇿🇦 I am a proud Venda man from Makhado, Limpopo. What makes me ME is not just one thing, it's the beautiful mix of voices in my home. I am my Gogo's hands - She wakes before the sun to sweep the yard, humming old Tshivenda songs that tell us who we are. She taught me to pound the maize for vhuswa, to cook delele and morogo with love, not just salt. Every meal is a prayer. I am my Father's language - Luambo lwa vhabebi vhanga. The way we greet each other "Aa!" with so much respect. The way we sit around the fire at night and he tells us ngano (folk tales) about ancestors who protected our mountains. I am my Mother's faith - Her early morning prayers before anyone is awake. Her belief that if you share your last piece of bread, God will always give you more. She taught me ubuntu - I am because we are. I am the smell of woodsmoke, the taste of mango from our tree, the sound of drums on Heritage Day, the bright colours of my minwenda. My heritage is love, respect, sharing and never forgetting where I come from. If I win, I want to give that love back - to feed the little ones at our local Educare, so they can start their super mornings with full tummies and know they come from greatness too. Ndi Muvenda, ndi wa Afrika. And I am so proud. #HappyHeritageDay #SouthAfrica #Nutrific #SuperMornings #Family
