50 Years of Alpen Original Swiss Style Muesli

This month we celebrate 50 years of Alpen Original Swiss Style Muesli! Alpen Muesli has a rich heritage with our Original variant still being produced to the same exact specifications and recipe as it was all those years ago.

Both muesli and granola were popularised by physicians promoting alternative health in the 1800s. The main difference between muesli and granola is that while both are made up of grains, nuts, seeds, and dried fruits, muesli is unbaked while granola is baked along with a sweetener and oil to bind the ingredients together.

An early champion of muesli in Europe was the Swiss doctor and nutritionist Maximillian Bircher-Benner, who promoted the virtues of muesli throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s as part of his belief in the health benefits of a raw-food diet. In 1971 Weetabix’s marketing director was visiting Switzerland when he was served his first taste of Swiss Style muesli during breakfast. He returned to create Alpen, based on Bircher-Benner’s recipe and this has remained unchanged to this day.

Celebrate with us by enjoying a delicious bowl of your favourite Alpen Muesli!
